St. Lorenzo Ruiz

The first Filipino saint, a lay missionary and calligrapher who was martyred in Japan for refusing to renounce Christianity.

Biography

St. Lorenzo Ruiz was a Chinese-Filipino binukot (altar server) and calligrapher from Manila who fled to Japan after being falsely accused of a crime. He was captured during the Tokugawa persecution and subjected to the water torture of tsurushi. He refused to renounce his faith and died a martyr, becoming the first Filipino saint.
