St. Gianna Beretta Molla

Gianna Beretta Molla was born in Magenta, a town near Milan in northern Italy, in 1922. She came from a devout Catholic family and grew up in a home where faith, service to others, and a strong sense of moral duty were central. From an early age, she felt drawn to both medicine and to a life of apostolic service. She eventually studied medicine and specialized in pediatrics, opening a practice where she served families and children with particular care for the poor and underserved.

Alongside her medical work, Gianna was deeply involved in Catholic lay life. She sought to live her faith concretely, serving those around her through volunteer work and parish activities. In 1955, she married Pietro Molla, an engineer, and the couple welcomed their first children in the years that followed. By the time of her final pregnancy, she was a mother of three. Her professional and personal life reflected a consistent conviction: that human life, at every stage, is sacred and worthy of protection.

In 1961, during her fourth pregnancy, Gianna was diagnosed with a fibroma (a tumor) in her uterus. Her physicians presented her with options that included terminating the pregnancy in order to treat the cancer more effectively. Gianna refused. She insisted that the life of her unborn child came first. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor while leaving the pregnancy intact, a decision that carried serious risks to her own health. In the days after the operation, she made her wishes clear to her family and doctors, asking that her child's life be saved even at the cost of her own.

In 1962, Gianna gave birth to a healthy daughter, whom she named Gianna Emanuela. The delivery itself was successful, but complications arising from the cancer and the earlier surgery took a serious toll. One week after giving birth, Gianna died. She was forty years old. Her final days were marked by the same clarity that had defined her life: she had chosen her child's life knowingly and without hesitation, trusting that her sacrifice was an act of love entrusted to God.

Gianna's witness quickly drew attention from the wider Church. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1994 and canonized by him a decade later, in 2004. At her canonization, her husband Pietro and their children were present, an unusual and moving moment in which the immediate family of a saint witnessed her being raised to the altars. Her feast day is celebrated on April 28, and she is venerated as a patron of mothers, physicians, unborn children, and the pro-life movement.
