St. Lawrence

Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome in the mid-third century, serving under Pope Sixtus II. In the early Church, deacons were not merely liturgical assistants; they administered the Church's charitable works, distributed alms, and cared for orphans, widows, and the poor. Lawrence took this charge seriously and became known for his generosity to those in need. Rome at the time was also home to a sizable Christian community living under the looming threat of periodic imperial persecution. The spark for Lawrence's arrest came from the emperor Valerian's edict against the Church, which targeted clergy and demanded that Christian communities hand over their wealth to the state. According to tradition, when Roman officials demanded that Lawrence surrender the treasures of the Church, he assembled the poor, the sick, and the marginalized and presented them, declaring that these were the true riches of the Church. Because he died in a blaze of fire, Lawrence became a patron of cooks and others who work with flame, including comedians, who have claimed him for his quip in the face of torture. He is also a patron of librarians, reflecting the long medieval association of his feast day with the blessing of books and the dedication of libraries. His relics are venerated in Rome, and a major basilica bears his name, though specific details of his burial and the church's development lie outside the scope of the earliest sources.
