St. Josephine Bakhita

A Sudanese woman who was kidnapped into slavery as a child, eventually found freedom and faith, and became a Canossian nun in Italy.

Biography

St. Josephine Bakhita was kidnapped from her village in Darfur at age seven and sold into slavery multiple times. After being bought by an Italian consul, she was brought to Italy where she encountered Christianity. She entered the Canossian Sisters and spent the rest of her life serving God with extraordinary gentleness and joy.

If I were to meet those who kidnapped me, and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands.
