St. Joachim

Saint Joachim is a figure known almost entirely through tradition rather than the canonical New Testament. He is honored as the father of the Virgin Mary and the grandfather of Jesus Christ, and is believed to have lived in Galilee in the late first century BC. His name, a Hebrew form meaning "Yahweh establishes," was uncommon in Jewish sources until the early Christian centuries, and most of what is told about him comes from apocryphal writings such as the Protoevangelium of James and later medieval texts. According to this tradition, Joachim was a wealthy and devout man who made generous offerings to the Temple, but he and his wife Anne were childless, a condition they experienced as a particular sorrow in their culture.

One of the most enduring stories about Joachim comes from the Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal text likely composed in the second century. In the account, Joachim was reportedly turned away from the Temple because of his childlessness and withdrew to the wilderness in fasting and prayer. While Anne mourned separately in her garden, both received angelic announcements that they would have a child. Their daughter, Mary, was born in due course, and the couple's late-life blessing became, in Christian memory, a sign of God's fidelity. These details are not found in the Bible itself but have shaped the way Joachim is venerated and depicted in Christian art and liturgy.

Joachim is named in none of the standard New Testament lists of Christ's ancestors, and his existence cannot be confirmed outside of pious tradition. Even so, devotion to him and Anne developed strongly from the early centuries, and the two became prominent figures in Eastern Christian tradition before spreading westward. In the sixth century, the Emperor Justinian reportedly dedicated a church in Constantinople to St. Anne, and shrines honoring the couple at Mary's traditional birthplace in Jerusalem drew pilgrims in the Byzantine period. Joachim and Anne entered the Roman calendar in 1584 through Pope Gregory XIII, and Anne was eventually given her own July 26 memorial in some local calendars.

Today, Saint Joachim is the patron of grandfathers, fathers, and cabinet makers, the last reflecting a tradition that he worked with wood. His feast day is July 26 in the Roman Catholic calendar, where he is generally commemorated together with Saint Anne as the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is often shown in art alongside Anne, sometimes presenting a palm branch or scroll, and he is invoked by those seeking blessings for family life, particularly for grandfathers and older parents. His legacy endures less as a figure of his own historical record than as a reminder of the holy family that Christian tradition believes preceded the Incarnation.

Because so much of what is said about Joachim rests on legend rather than historical record, his witness is best understood as a meditation on the long faithfulness of two parents who, in the story the Church has treasured, were given the grace of raising the Mother of God. Devotion to Joachim and Anne fits within the larger Catholic practice of honoring ancestors of Christ and the extended family of Jesus, and the couple appears in the Communion of Saints as patrons of marriage, family unity, and later-in-life vocations. Whether or not every detail of his story can be verified, the figure of Joachim has served generations of Christians as a model of patient trust in God's promises.
