St. Joachim

Saint Joachim is the traditional name of the father of Mary and maternal grandfather of Jesus. His place in Christian devotion is well established, but the canonical Gospels do not name Mary's parents or provide their biographies.

The familiar accounts of Joachim and Anne arise chiefly from early apocryphal writings, especially the Protoevangelium of James. They describe a couple grieving over childlessness and receiving the promise of Mary's birth. These narratives influenced art and devotion without becoming part of the biblical canon.

Later Christians associated places in Jerusalem with their family and developed liturgical celebrations in their honor. The history of that devotion is distinct from proof of individual details such as Joachim's occupation, possessions, travels, or exact age. Attempts to identify him confidently with names in Gospel genealogies remain uncertain.

Together with Anne, Joachim represents the generations preceding Jesus and the family setting in which Mary grew up. Their shared commemoration also gives grandparents a recognizable place in Catholic devotion. Honoring him does not require turning every apocryphal episode into verified history; the distinction allows the tradition to be appreciated honestly.

Joachim's liturgical history illustrates how established devotion need not imply an unchanging feast date. The Catholic Encyclopedia records early Greek observance after Mary's birthday and several different dates in the Latin tradition. It also notes the restoration of his feast by Gregory XV in 1622 and its later placement by Clement XII in 1738.

These changes concern how communities organized public remembrance; they cannot establish a date in Joachim's otherwise undocumented personal life. The historical calendar is therefore a source for the reception of Mary's father, separate from the apocryphal narratives about him. Keeping those questions apart makes sense of older prayer books whose dates differ from the present shared commemoration of Joachim and Anne.
