He is associated with the city of Piacenza in northern Italy, and the place name that became part of his title suggests his life and reputation were rooted in that region. The scarcity of firm information about his early years means that his origins, family background, and youth remain largely a matter of tradition rather than documented history.

The turning point in Conrad's life, according to traditional accounts, came through a profound spiritual experience.
