St. Zélie Martin

Aloysia Thérèse Martin — known as Zélie — was born on December 23, 1831, in Saint-Denis-sur-Sarthon, Normandy, France. Her parents, Louis-Isidore Guérin and Louise-Jeanne Macé, were devout Catholics. Zélie grew up watching her mother run a small business and learned needlework from a young age, a skill that would shape the rest of her life. Although she herself longed to enter religious life, her application to the Sisters of Charity was reportedly declined, and she turned to secular life with a deep but often anxious interior faith.

In 1858, Zélie married Louis Martin, a watchmaker from Alençon. He too had considered becoming a religious and was briefly a seminarian before leaving due to ill health; both of them carried a quiet sense of the vocation they had set aside. The couple had nine children, seven of whom survived infancy. After a casual mention of the Bonheur workshop, Zélie began making the famous Alençon needle lace, and within a few years she was running one of the most successful lace houses in the region, employing dozens of women. Louis eventually closed his watchmaking shop to help manage her business and the household.

Zélie raised her children with intense practical and spiritual care, nursing the sick through scarlet fever and managing a household of growing daughters. The household was centered on daily Mass, the rosary, and the Liturgy of the Hours. Four of her surviving daughters entered Carmel at Lisieux — including her youngest, Thérèse — and one became a Visitandine. Though she lived long enough to entrust her daughters to religious life, she never saw Thérèse's vocation fulfilled, dying of breast cancer on August 28, 1877, at the manor in Lisieux, where Louis had moved the family to be near the Carmel.

Her letters, collected and published in the mid-20th century, are now considered a spiritual classic: warm, witty, and direct, filled with the joys and exhaustion of motherhood and an unembarrassed longing for holiness. She and Louis were both beatified in 2008 and canonized by Pope Francis on October 18, 2015 — the first married couple in Church history to be canonized together. Their feast day is celebrated jointly on July 12. She is remembered as a patron of mothers, businesswomen, and parents, and as a witness that sanctity can be pursued at the sewing table as well as in the cloister.
