St. María Guadalupe García Zavala

María Guadalupe García Zavala was born in Zapopan and helped found the Servants of Saint Margaret Mary and the Poor with Father Cipriano Íñiguez. Their community cared for patients who lacked resources. As its superior, she combined direct nursing with the practical work of finding support for the hospital.

She had expected to marry before deciding at twenty-three to pursue religious service. The foundation began in 1901, and care for patients quickly required more than nursing skill. She sought donations when resources were exhausted, keeping the hospital's immediate needs at the center of fundraising.

Her ministry continued during periods of religious persecution in Mexico, when the community also sheltered clergy. She encouraged simplicity so the sisters could serve poor people without social distance. Her final years brought serious illness, and she died in Guadalajara in 1963. Beatified in 2004 and canonized in 2013, she is commemorated on June 24.

Her ideal of sharing the life of the poor shaped community discipline as well as personal generosity. It discouraged a social distance between those receiving care and those providing it. During persecution, protecting clergy added another responsibility, but the hospital's ministry to vulnerable patients remained the central practical expression of her vocation.

The Holy See's account includes an easily overlooked detail of the persecution years: Mother Lupita provided food and care for persecutors living near the hospital as well as shelter for those they threatened. It reports that these neighbors eventually defended the sick there. The hospital's vulnerability makes this a particularly concrete example of assistance crossing hostile political lines.

Her community's work also spread beyond its original wards. Eleven foundations were established in Mexico during her lifetime, and the sisters assisted parishes through catechesis alongside their hospital service. These developments show a founder coordinating a growing network of care and religious instruction, rather than leaving only the memory of exceptional nursing in one place.
