St. John of Capistrano

John of Capistrano was born in 1386 in Capistrano, in the Abruzzi region of southern Italy. The son of a former knight who had been briefly imprisoned, he received a solid education in law and went on to serve as a magistrate in the Kingdom of Naples. His early life was that of an ambitious young man climbing the ranks of civil administration, but it took a dramatic turn when he was sent as an envoy to King Ladislaus of Naples. Imprisoned on suspicion of conspiracy, he reportedly experienced a spiritual crisis during his captivity. Upon his release, John renounced his career and his marriage, and entered the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor, being ordained in 1420.

His entry into the Franciscans brought him under the influence of the Observant branch's reform movement, and he was soon drawn into collaboration with the great Franciscan preacher Bernardine of Siena. Following Bernardine's death in 1444, John of Capistrano emerged as one of the most effective itinerant preachers of fifteenth-century Europe. He traveled extensively through Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Poland, and the Balkans, drawing enormous crowds with his powerful, sometimes harsh preaching on sin, penance, and the call to reform. He was also a skilled administrator, serving as papal inquisitor and as vicar general of the Observant Franciscans, and he helped found or reorganize numerous Franciscan communities, particularly in Central Europe. He was active in the 1452 debate at the court of Frederick III in Wiener Neustadt, defending Jewish communities against false blood libels.

In his sixties, John turned his energies toward confronting the military threat of the Ottoman Empire. He was the chief preacher of the Crusade proclaimed by Pope Callixtus III, traveling through Hungary, Serbia, and beyond to rally support, organize supplies, and raise funds. In the summer of 1456, he joined the defense of Belgrade alongside the Hungarian general John Hunyadi, who led the actual military operation. The Ottoman forces were repulsed on July 14, 1456, in a battle often credited with checking Ottoman expansion into Central Europe for decades. Worn down by age, privation, and the rigors of his campaign, John died on October 23, 1456, in the town of Sremski Karlovci (Ilok), in present-day Serbia.

He was canonized by Pope Callixtus III on August 16, 1456 — the same year as his death. While he is sometimes remembered as a kind of 'second founder' of the Franciscan Observants, he is more precisely recognized in Franciscan tradition as one of the four great evangelical doctors (doctores evangelici) alongside Bonaventure, Anthony of Padua, and Lawrence of Brindisi. He is the patron saint of military chaplains, jurists, and the city of Belgrade, and his feast is kept on October 23.
