St. John Baptist de Rossi

John Baptist de Rossi was born on February 22, 1698, in the village of Voltaggio, near Genoa in northern Italy. He came from a pious and prosperous family; his father, also named John Baptist, was a farmer known for his generosity to the local poor. From an early age, the younger John Baptist showed signs of deep religious devotion, and the family relocated to Rome when he was still a child in order to support his vocation and education. He would later return to the Genoa region as a young priest and was eventually adopted as a patron of the city itself, a sign of the high regard in which his homeland held him.

Recognized for his intellect and piety, de Rossi was educated at the Collegio Romano and was eventually ordained a priest in 1721. Almost immediately he began working among the poor and the sick in some of the roughest districts of Rome, devoting himself especially to the people of the Trastevere neighborhood and the Rione Campitelli area near the ancient Forum. He also worked closely with the Confraternity of the Little Workers, a lay group committed to the catechesis and material care of abandoned children and the destitute.

His ministry was marked by a striking combination of practical charity and spiritual depth. De Rossi spent long hours hearing confessions, instructing catechumens, visiting the sick in their homes, and distributing food, clothing, and other necessities to those in need. He is remembered as a tireless pastor who seemed to know every poor family in his district by name. Contemporary accounts describe him as physically frail but spiritually resilient, often pushing himself beyond what his health could comfortably bear in order to be present to those who suffered.

In addition to his pastoral work among the poor, de Rossi was deeply committed to the formation of priests and to preaching. He served as a spiritual director for seminarians and was known for his gift as a confessor, drawing people from across Rome to seek his counsel. His preaching was characterized by a plainspoken warmth rather than erudition, and he made extensive use of simple catechetical instructions to reach those who had little formal education.

De Rossi died on May 23, 1764, in Rome, after a final period of declining health. He had spent roughly four decades in active ministry, and the people of the neighborhoods he served mourned him deeply. He was beatified by Pope Leo XII in 1860 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1881. Today he is honored as a model of priestly charity and is invoked as a patron of the sick, of catechists, and of the city of Genoa.
