St. Hubert

Saint Hubert was born around 656 into the nobility of the Frankish kingdom, in the region of what is now Belgium. He was raised in a family of considerable rank, with his father, Bertrand, serving at the court of the Merovingian ruler. Hubert's early life was marked by privilege, and like many nobles of his era, he developed a deep passion for hunting, a pursuit that was both sport and status symbol among the Frankish aristocracy. He married Floribonne, a woman of noble birth, and the couple had a son, Floribert, who would later succeed his father in his ecclesiastical role.

The defining moment of Hubert's life came during a hunting expedition on Good Friday, when he pursued a magnificent stag. Tradition holds that as the animal turned toward him, Hubert saw a luminous crucifix between its antlers and heard a voice calling him to turn his heart toward the Lord. This vision shattered his former life. Tragically, around the same period, his wife Floribonne died in childbirth (though the chronology of these events varies across sources), which further opened him to religious vocation. He renounced his titles and worldly pursuits, giving away much of his wealth, and placed himself under the spiritual guidance of Saint Lambert, bishop of Maastricht, becoming his disciple.

Following the assassination of Lambert in 705 or 706, Hubert was chosen to succeed him as bishop of Maastricht, eventually transferring the see to Liège, which became an important center of Christian life in the Low Countries. As bishop, Hubert was known for his rigorous preaching, his efforts to evangelize the still-pagan regions of the Ardennes, and his care for the poor. He reportedly traveled widely, confronting lingering pagan practices and calling the faithful to deeper conversion.

Hubert died on May 30, 727, at Fura, near Liège, though his relics were later translated to the town that came to bear his name: Saint-Hubert in the Belgian Ardennes, where an abbey grew around his tomb and became a major pilgrimage site. His veneration spread across Europe, particularly among hunting communities, and he was formally recognized in the Roman calendar with his feast day on November 3. His patronage of hunters, dogs, forest workers, metalworkers, and archers reflects both the circumstances of his conversion and the breadth of devotion that grew up around his memory.
