St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Maria Francesca Cabrini was born on July 15, 1850, in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, a small town in Lombardy, Italy. The youngest of eleven children, she grew up in a devout farming family. As a child she was already known for her piety, and she reportedly tried twice to join religious orders but was turned away, in part because of her fragile health. She was an asthmatic child and faced many health challenges, yet she channeled that early energy into teaching and caring for the poor, first as a student at the Daughters of the Sacred Heart and later by helping run a parish school for girls.

In 1880, after joining a group of seven women committed to religious life, Cabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with the encouragement of her bishop and eventually the support of Pope Leo XIII. The pope had originally suggested she go to China, but after the bishop of Piacenza described the desperate situation of Italian emigrants leaving for the Americas, he redirected her west. She crossed the Atlantic for the first time in 1889 and settled in New York City, where Italian immigrants were crowded into tenements with little access to schools, hospitals, or the sacraments.

Mother Cabrini threw herself into this work with remarkable energy. Over the next two decades she and her sisters established a network of schools, hospitals, orphanages, and catechetical centers across the United States, particularly in cities with large Italian-American populations such as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1909 and continued to raise funds and recruit sisters to sustain the growing mission. She also traveled to Central and South American countries to expand the congregation's work among Italian diaspora communities there, although the exact cities and dates of those foundations are not consistently recorded.

In her later years Cabrini suffered from ill health, including the effects of malaria she had contracted in Brazil. She died on December 22, 1917, at Columbus Hospital in Chicago, one of the institutions her congregation had founded. At the time of her death the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart ran more than 60 institutions on multiple continents. She was canonized in 1946 and is recognized as the first naturalized American citizen to be canonized as a saint. Her feast day is celebrated on November 13, the date of her canonization rather than the anniversary of her death.

Cabrini's legacy endures through the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, who continue her work in more than a dozen countries, and through the millions of immigrants for whom she remains a powerful advocate. Shrines dedicated to her exist in New York City (where her remains are enshrined at the National Shrine of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in Washington Heights) and in her hometown of Sant'Angelo Lodigiano. She is honored as a model of practical holiness: a woman who responded to the Gospel by rolling up her sleeves for the poorest among her people.
