St. Dominic Savio

Dominic Savio was born in 1842 in San Giovanni di Riva, a small village in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. From what is known of his early years, he was a serious and devout child whose piety stood out among his peers. His life, however, is documented primarily through one extraordinary source: the biography written by his teacher, St. John Bosco, who knew him personally and later recorded his young student's words, habits, and spiritual development in detail. Much of what is confidently known about Dominic's interior life therefore comes to us filtered through Don Bosco's account, and readers should keep that in mind when considering specific claims about his childhood devotions.

At around the age of twelve, Dominic joined the Oratory that Don Bosco had founded in Turin for poor and abandoned boys. According to Don Bosco, the young man quickly distinguished himself among the other pupils through a maturity and a seriousness about the faith that seemed far beyond his years. He reportedly worked to settle disputes among his classmates, encouraging them to avoid harsh language and to treat one another with kindness. Don Bosco described him as a natural peacemaker whose example drew other boys toward better behavior.

Dominic is associated with a fervent devotion to the Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Don Bosco's biography records that he encouraged his fellow students to share in these devotions. It was also during this period that Dominic became a member of a group Don Bosco had organized called the Company of the Immaculate Conception, in which students pledged to support one another in living a devout life and to assist Don Bosco in his work with the oratory. Two of his sayings, recorded by Don Bosco, have become especially well known: 'Death but not sin!' and 'I am not alone; I have my Angel Guardian with me.'

Dominic's health, never robust, deteriorated while he was still at the oratory, and in early 1857 he was sent home to recover. He died of pleurisy on March 9, 1857, at the age of fourteen. The news of his death affected Don Bosco deeply, and the priest soon began work on a biography of his young pupil. That book, 'Life of Dominic Savio,' became one of the most widely read spiritual works for Catholic youth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and did much to spread awareness of Dominic's holiness.

Dominic was beatified in 1950 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1954. He is recognized as one of the youngest non-martyrs to be formally canonized in the Catholic Church. He is venerated as a patron of choirboys, of juveniles, and of those who have been falsely accused. His feast day is celebrated on May 6, and his short life continues to be held up as an example of sanctity achievable even in childhood.

The legacy of Dominic Savio is closely intertwined with that of Don Bosco and the Salesian charism. Through the Salesian family of religious congregations and the wider network of schools and youth programs that trace their inspiration to Don Bosco, Dominic remains a familiar figure. His story is often told to young people as evidence that holiness is not reserved for the old or the learned, but can take root in a child's heart.
