St. Richard of Chichester

Saint Richard of Chichester, also known as Richard de la Wych, is one of the most venerated English bishops of the medieval period. The exact details of his birth are not firmly established, though he is generally thought to have been born in England in the first half of the thirteenth century, likely into a family of modest means. Some accounts suggest he may have been orphaned young and raised by an older brother, though the precise circumstances of his early life remain uncertain. What is clear is that his path to holiness began through an earnest pursuit of learning and a deep interior life that gradually oriented him toward priestly service.

Richard became a scholar at the University of Oxford, where he distinguished himself for both his academic ability and his moral seriousness. He eventually pursued further studies, and during this period he came under the spiritual influence of Edmund of Abingdon, the future Archbishop of Canterbury. Edmund's example of pastoral care, poverty, and devotion to the poor left a lasting mark on Richard, shaping the kind of bishop he would later become. Richard was ordained to the priesthood and served for a time as rector of a parish, where his gentle manner and faithful preaching reportedly drew many to the practice of the faith.

His reputation for holiness and learning led to his election as Bishop of Chichester in 1244, though his consecration was contested by King Henry III, who opposed the appointment on the grounds of royal rights over episcopal elections. The dispute dragged on for several years, and Richard endured real hardship during the period, including the seizure of the revenues of his see. He remained remarkably patient through the conflict, and once he was finally installed as bishop, he poured himself into the work of reform. He was known for restoring neglected churches, supporting his priests, and visiting his people directly. He also made provisions in his will for the relief of the poor, Jewish converts, and even former Crusaders in need.

Richard died shortly after his episcopal consecration was finally recognized, and the traditional date given is 1253, though historians have noted some uncertainty around the precise year. He was buried in Chichester Cathedral, and miracles were soon reported at his tomb. He was canonized by Pope Urban IV in 1262, less than a decade after his death, a reflection of the immediate and widespread devotion he inspired. His cult became especially popular in England, where he came to be regarded as a model of faithful diocesan leadership.

Today, Saint Richard of Chichester is remembered for the prayer that bears his name, drawn from the words he reportedly spoke on his deathbed: a petition to know Christ more clearly, to love him more dearly, and to follow him more nearly. His feast day is celebrated on February 7. He is honored as a patron of diocesan clergy and of Sussex, and he remains a beloved figure among English Catholics as a bishop who combined scholarly learning with humble, attentive pastoral care.
