St. Peter Julian Eymard

Peter Julian Eymard was born on February 4, 1811, in La Mure, a small town in the Isère region of southeastern France. He was the fifth of eleven children in a devoutly Catholic family. His father, a blacksmith, died when Peter Julian was still young, and his mother raised the family with a strong faith. He received his early education from the local parish priest and at the minor seminary, where he began to feel drawn to the priesthood. However, his path to religious life was not immediate, and he initially worked in commerce before entering the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1840 and later being ordained a diocesan priest in 1844.

As a diocesan priest, Eymard served as a parish priest in Chatte and then worked to revitalize several Marian congregations. During this period, he developed a profound personal devotion to the Eucharist, which became the defining passion of his life. He made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Fourvière in Lyon, where he felt a specific calling to found a religious congregation entirely dedicated to honoring the Blessed Sacrament. The Eucharist, he believed, was the source and summit of Christian life, and he wanted to give it a dedicated religious order and a perpetual adoration movement.

In 1856, Eymard founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (the Blessed Sacrament Fathers) in Paris, with the explicit mission of promoting Eucharistic devotion and perpetual adoration. A congregation for women, the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, was later co-founded with Marguerite Guillot. Eymard also organized the First Communion retreats for children and adults, and he was a driving force behind the spread of nocturnal and perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament — practices that were not yet widespread in the mid-19th century. He established the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and worked to bring together existing Eucharistic associations.

His later years were marked by declining health and the suffering of rejections and setbacks within the Church regarding his work. In 1863, he was appointed director of the Forty Hours devotion in Rome, but his poor health forced him to return to France. He lived his final years at the motherhouse of his congregation in Paris on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Jacques. He died on August 1, 1868, in Paris, having spent himself entirely for the love of the Eucharist. He was canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962, and his feast day is celebrated on August 2.

Eymard's spiritual legacy endures through his congregation, which continues to staff parishes and shrines around the world, and through his writings, including the autobiographical 'My Ideal' and 'The Real Presence,' which remain classics of Eucharistic spirituality. He is often called the 'Apostle of the Eucharist' for his tireless promotion of frequent Communion, adoration, and liturgical renewal in the years before the First Vatican Council. His work helped lay the groundwork for the renewal of Eucharistic devotion that flourished after Vatican II, and he remains a key patron of Eucharistic congresses and adoration.
