St. Michael de los Santos

Michael de los Santos is remembered as a Spanish-born Franciscan priest who devoted his life to missionary work in the Philippines. Although the details of his early years in Spain are scarce, he is counted among the many friars of the Franciscan order who traveled from the Iberian Peninsula to the Spanish Pacific during the era of evangelization. His vocation appears to have been shaped by the long Franciscan tradition of missionary service, which combined a strict contemplative life with active preaching among peoples who had not yet heard the Christian Gospel. Fr. Michael entered the Franciscan Order and eventually made his way to the Philippines, where he joined the growing network of friars working among the islands' indigenous communities.
