St. Martin de Porres

Juan Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a woman of African and Indigenous descent. Because the social conventions of colonial Peru disadvantaged children of mixed and African ancestry, he grew up facing racial prejudice and limited formal opportunities. From a young age he was drawn to work with the poor and sick, and he served as an assistant in a barber-surgeon's shop, an apprenticeship that gave him practical experience in caring for the ill.

As a teenager, Martin entered the Dominican convent of Our Lady of the Rosary in Lima as a servant boy, performing menial work and caring for the animals kept at the priory. He eventually asked to be received as a Dominican lay brother, and he spent the rest of his life in the community. His days were given over to humble service: he cooked, cleaned, and tended the gardens, while also devoting himself to the sick, the hungry, and anyone who came to the priory door seeking help. He is remembered for extending this compassion to animals as well, and traditional accounts of his life describe him caring for strays and even gently brushing flies from the faces of the infirm.

Martin became widely known in Lima for tending plague patients and the desperately poor, including enslaved people and others whom most of society ignored. The Dominicans eventually entrusted him with significant responsibilities in the infirmary and almonry, work that fit naturally with the spiritual gifts his community recognized in him. Stories of healings and answered prayers circulated during his lifetime and contributed to the reputation for holiness that followed his death on November 3, 1639, in Lima.

He was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI in 1837 and canonized by Pope John XXIII on May 6, 1962. His feast day is November 3, and he is venerated as the patron saint of barbers, innkeepers, public health workers, and those who work for racial harmony. Artists often depict him with a broom, a dog and a cat at his feet, and sometimes a crucifix, all of which have become recognizable emblems of his humility, his love of all God's creatures, and his quiet, practical charity.
