St. John of God

John of God (1495–1550) was born João Duarte Cidade in the town of Montemor-o-Novo in southern Portugal. The details of his early life are uncertain and in places romanticized, but he appears to have left home as a young man and spent years traveling through Spain and, according to some accounts, parts of North Africa, working as a shepherd and a soldier. He later settled in the Spanish city of Granada, where he worked as a bookseller. Whatever the precise details, his early years were marked by hardship and movement rather than religious formation.

A turning point came in 1537, when John was about forty-two. Moved by a sermon preached by John of Ávila, a priest and later himself a saint, he experienced a profound conversion. He reportedly went through a period of intense public penance in Granada, distributing his belongings and even being briefly placed in an asylum as a result of his behavior. After recovering his equilibrium, he devoted himself to caring for the sick and the poor, founding a small hospital in Granada. He became known for his deep compassion, accepting patients of every background regardless of their ability to pay.

In 1550, John traveled north to the town of Tormes to visit John of Ávila. During this journey he fell ill, and he died in Granada shortly after returning. After his death, his followers continued his work, and in 1572 they were formally recognized as the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a religious order dedicated to the care of the sick. (The formal rule under which the order would eventually operate was developed by his followers in the years after his death; its exact origins are not entirely clear from the historical record.)

John was beatified in 1630 and canonized by Pope Alexander VIII in 1690. He is venerated as a model of practical charity, and his feast day is celebrated on March 8. The hospital tradition he began has expanded into a global network of healthcare institutions run by the Brothers Hospitallers, which continue to operate hospitals and care facilities in many countries today.

He is widely recognized as a patron saint of hospitals, nurses, sick people, heart patients, and the mentally ill. The work of the Brothers Hospitallers in caring for the mentally ill, in particular, is one of the most distinctive parts of his legacy, as the treatment of mental illness was a particular focus of his hospital in Granada and of the order that grew from it.
