St. Claude de la Colombière

Claude de la Colombière was born on February 2, 1641, in Saint-Symphorien-d'Ozon, a small town in the Dauphiné region of southeastern France. He came from a respectable bourgeois family; his father was a notary and a royal official. Claude received his early education from the Jesuits in Lyon, an experience that proved formative and led him to enter the Society of Jesus in 1659 at the age of eighteen. He went on to study literature, rhetoric, and philosophy at the Jesuit college in Paris, where he proved himself an exceptionally gifted student, and later completed his theological studies at the Collège de Clermont. Ordained to the priesthood in 1669, Claude spent several years teaching grammar and the humanities at Jesuit schools in Lyon and Avignon. He developed a reputation as an outstanding educator and a gifted preacher, known for his clarity, elegance, and spiritual depth. During this period he also composed devotional works, including a well-known paraphrase of the *Imitation of Christ* and reflections on the spiritual life that circulated widely even during his lifetime. In 1674, Claude was assigned as superior to the small Jesuit community at Paray-le-Monial in Burgundy. It was there that he encountered a young Visitation nun, Margaret Mary Alacoque, who had been receiving private revelations concerning the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Claude became her spiritual director and, after a careful process of discernment, authenticated the authenticity of her visions. He played a central role in encouraging the spread of devotion to the Sacred Heart, helping Margaret Mary to understand and articulate her experiences and promoting the practice among the wider faithful. His treatise *Novena of the Sacred Heart* and other writings on the devotion helped give it lasting theological shape. His time at Paray-le-Monial was cut short. Around 1676, Claude was sent to London to serve as preacher to Mary of Modena, the Catholic Duchess of York, and to minister to the small but persecuted English Catholic community. In 1678, during the anti-Catholic hysteria surrounding the fabricated Titus Oates Plot, Claude was arrested and imprisoned. He was eventually expelled from England and returned to France in 1679, his health broken by the ordeal. Claude spent his final years in Lyon, where he died on February 15, 1682, at the age of forty. He was beatified in 1929 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1992, shortly after Margaret Mary herself was canonized. His memorial is celebrated on February 15, the anniversary of his death. Beyond his association with the Sacred Heart devotion, Claude is remembered as a model of priestly spiritual direction, a writer of lasting devotional literature, and a faithful witness who endured persecution for his faith.
