St. Cajetan

Saint Cajetan was born in October 1480 in Vicenza, in the Republic of Venice, into a noble family. His father, Gasparo Thiene, was a count, and his mother, Maria Porti, came from a prominent Veronese family. Educated in classical learning and law, Cajetan studied at the University of Padua, where he is said to have earned doctorates in both civil and canon law. Early in his career he worked in Rome at the papal court, serving under Pope Julius II, and for a time he held a position in the Venetian government. These years of worldly success, however, left him increasingly dissatisfied. Around 1516 or 1517, Cajetan experienced a profound spiritual turn. He took priestly vows, joined the Oratory of Divine Love in Rome, and devoted himself to the sick, the poor, and prisoners. He famously attended the hospital of San Giacomo degli Incurabili, ministering personally to the dying. In 1522 or 1523, he began to gather companions in the Theatine, Pope Adrian VI, a fellow reformer, provided early encouragement. In 1524, Cajetan co-founded the Congregation of Clerks Regular, known as the Theatines (after the Latin name for the region of his birth, Chieti, where he was bishop). The order was dedicated to the reform of clergy and laity, the renewal of priestly life, and the active service of the poor. Cajetan's deep trust in Divine Providence became one of the hallmarks of his spirituality. He is said to have founded a charitable bank in Naples to help the poor and protect them from predatory moneylenders, and stories circulated of his willingness to rely entirely on God's provision for the material needs of his communities. In 1533, he helped establish the Monti di Pietà movement, offering small loans on modest terms as an alternative to usury, although some of these details are traditional rather than strictly documented. Despite the difficulties of the Protestant Reformation and tensions within the Church, Cajetan continued to preach and serve. He was made Bishop of Chieti (Teatine) in 1522, though he sometimes found it difficult to govern from afar. He spent his later years founding hospitals and confraternities, and he traveled to Naples, where the Theatine community grew. Exhausted by his work, he died in Naples on August 7, 1547. He was canonized in 1671, more than a century after his death. Cajetan's legacy endures in the Theatine order, in the charitable institutions he helped found, and in the devotion of those who turn to him as patron of job seekers and the unemployed. His feast day, August 7, invites the faithful to trust, as he did, that God provides for those who place their lives in His hands. He remains a model of pastoral charity and reform rooted not in ambition but in simple reliance on the Lord.
