Biography

St. Bernadette Soubirous was a sickly, impoverished girl from Lourdes, France, who in 1858 experienced 18 visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the grotto of Massabielle. The spring she uncovered during the apparitions became a site of miraculous healings. She later became a nun and lived a hidden life of prayer and suffering.
