St. Michael McGivney

Michael Joseph McGivney was born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to Irish immigrant parents. His father, Patrick, and his mother, Mary, had fled the famine in Ireland and settled in New England, where they raised a large Catholic family. Michael grew up in a working-class neighborhood and attended local schools before being sent to the Petite Séminaire (Minor Seminary) of Our Lady of the Angels in nearby Waterbury to prepare for the priesthood. He was an industrious and devout young man whose faith was shaped by the immigrant Catholic culture of late nineteenth-century New England. As a teenager, McGivney was forced to leave the seminary and take a job as a factory worker to help support his family after his father's death. For several years he worked in the brass mills of Waterbury, an experience that gave him a lifelong solidarity with the laboring poor. He eventually resumed his studies, entering St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and later St. Mary's Seminary in Rochester, New York, before being sent to study theology at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Hartford on December 22, 1877. As a young curate at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Father McGivney witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by immigrant Catholic families. Widows with young children often had no financial safety net, and many men were cut off from the sacraments because they belonged to fraternal lodges that required them to renounce their Catholic faith. Seeking a practical remedy, McGivney gathered a small group of parishioners in the basement of St. Mary's Church on October 2, 1881, and together they founded the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal and charitable organization open to practicing Catholic men. The order was formally chartered by the state of Connecticut in 1882, and its early twin commitments were a death-benefit insurance system to protect families and a commitment to keep members within the life of the Church. Father McGivney served as the first Supreme Knight of the order but, ever humble, stepped aside after a few terms to let laymen take the helm. He continued his priestly ministry, eventually becoming pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Connecticut. In his brief tenure there he also took on pastoral duties at Immaculate Conception Church in nearby Terryville, riding on horseback between the two parishes. He contracted pneumonia during the influenza pandemic of 1918 and died on August 14, 1918, at the age of 65, in the rectory of St. Thomas Church. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI recognized the heroic virtues of Father McGivney, bestowing on him the title of Venerable. He was beatified by Pope Francis on October 31, 2020, in a ceremony at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut, after the Vatican attributed to his intercession the miraculous healing of a young boy with a severe terminal illness. The Knights of Columbus, meanwhile, grew from a handful of New Haven parishioners into one of the world's largest Catholic fraternal organizations, with more than two million members in countries around the globe. He has not yet been formally assigned a universal patronage, but he is widely invoked as a model for Catholic family life, for fraternal charity, and for priests who serve ordinary working people.
