St. Louis Martin

Louis Martin was born on August 22, 1823, in Bordeaux, France, the son of a French military officer. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he spent part of his early life in Alençon, Normandy, where his family eventually settled. As a young man, Louis felt drawn to religious life and sought admission to the Carmelite monastery in Le Mans, but he was turned away, reportedly because he did not have sufficient knowledge of Latin. He later learned the watchmaking trade, a craft that would define his working life and eventually inspire the metaphor of a 'little flower' that his youngest daughter would make famous.

Though he set aside his own monastic ambitions, Louis continued to live a life of quiet devotion. In 1858 he married Zélie Guérin, a skilled lace maker from Alençon. Their marriage was rooted in a shared desire to live for God, and the couple made a private vow of chastity after several years of marriage, an unusual but sincere commitment to channel all their love toward the service of heaven. Together they had nine children, though only five daughters survived to adulthood. Tragically, Zélie died of breast cancer in 1877, leaving Louis to carry the weight of raising his surviving children alone.

A watchmaker by profession, Louis ran a successful shop in Lisieux for many years. He passed his trade on to his son-in-law, and he passed on something far more enduring: a deep interior life of faith. The family had moved to Lisieux in 1877, and it was there that his youngest daughter, Marie-Françoise-Thérèse, would grow up and eventually enter the Carmelite convent at the age of fifteen. Louis gave his wholehearted blessing to each of his daughters' religious vocations, and all five surviving daughters became nuns, four entering Carmel and one entering the Visitation order.

In his later years, Louis suffered from cerebral arteriosclerosis, a progressive illness that brought confusion, memory loss, and eventually required him to be placed under the care of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Caen. Despite this painful affliction, those who cared for him spoke of his patience and his enduring gentleness. He died on July 29, 1894, in Caen, and was buried alongside Zélie in the cemetery at Lisieux. His quiet holiness and his role as the father of one of the Church's most beloved saints were eventually recognized when he and Zélie were beatified together in 2008 and canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis, making them the first married couple to be canonized together in the history of the Church.
