A Grand Duchess of Russia who became a nun after her husband's murder and founded a convent for the poor.

Biography

Princess Elizabeth of Hesse was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and sister to the last Tsarina. After her husband was killed by a bomb, she visited his assassin to forgive him. She became a nun and founded the Martha and Mary Convent in Moscow, serving the city's poorest. She was thrown down a mine shaft alive by the Bolsheviks.
