St. Lorenzo Ruiz

Lorenzo Ruiz was a married layman from Binondo in Manila, where he served a Dominican parish. His father was Chinese and his mother Filipino. In 1636 he sailed with Dominican missionaries to Japan, where Christianity was being violently suppressed. Arrest followed, and the group was eventually taken to Nagasaki.

He was educated in the Dominican parish environment and earned a living copying documents. His marriage and children are central to his identity as a lay saint. His departure followed an accusation connected with a homicide; the surviving account does not permit a confident reconstruction of the incident.

Ruiz refused to abandon his faith under torture and died in 1637. His story belongs to a persecution that claimed Japanese Christians as well as foreign missionaries. John Paul II beatified him in Manila in 1981 and canonized him with fifteen companions in 1987. He is recognized as the first Filipino canonized by the Catholic Church.

His journey therefore began under circumstances different from those of missionaries who had deliberately prepared for Japan. Once arrested, however, he faced the same demand to renounce Christianity. Remembering the Japanese members of the group prevents his better-known Filipino identity from overshadowing the wider community that suffered alongside him.

When several saints share a date, this guide first favors saints on the USCCB’s U.S. calendar, then other documented Catholic commemorations. Dates can vary by place and tradition. This is a discovery guide, not the official liturgical calendar for your parish; the liturgical banner follows the celebration for the year. The date browser includes February 29 for leap years.
