Biography

Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński lost his father as a boy, and his mother was later deported to Siberia for patriotic activity. He studied mathematics in Moscow and continued his education in Paris before entering the seminary. Ordained in 1855, he worked in teaching and pastoral ministry and founded the Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary.

As archbishop of Warsaw he encouraged clergy formation, catechesis and assistance to poor children. Conflict with Russian authority led to twenty years of exile at Yaroslavl, where he continued religious service. After release he was barred from Warsaw and spent his final years in Galicia, helping establish schooling and other local works. Benedict XVI canonized Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński in 2009.
