Biography
Zygmunt Gorazdowski grew up in Sanok and began studying law at Lviv before entering the seminary. Serious illness delayed his ordination, but improved health allowed him to become a priest in 1871. His later ministry in Lviv combined school catechesis with publishing catechisms and guidance for parents and educators.
He organized charitable institutions and formed a community of women to carry their work forward. The Sisters of Saint Joseph were officially founded in 1884 and served in hospitals, orphanages and other homes, also visiting sick people in their own houses. Prayer and practical assistance remained linked throughout his pastoral and organizational work. Benedict XVI canonized Zygmunt Gorazdowski in 2005.
