Biography
Virginia Centurione Bracelli came from a prominent Genoese family and married at her father's insistence. Widowed at twenty, she raised her two daughters and gradually devoted more resources to people in need. Her responsibilities to family and her charitable vocation developed together rather than following entirely separate lives.
War and displacement increased the number of vulnerable people arriving in Genoa. Virginia welcomed young people and poor women, sought out families in difficulty, and helped organize other women in charitable service. Her work extended to abandoned children, elderly people, and the sick. She died in 1651 and was canonized in 2003; her story offers a lay example of hospitality growing into organized care.
