Biography

Vincenzo Romano was born in Torre del Greco and entered the Naples seminary as a teenager. After ordination in 1775, he taught children in his home and visited rural communities to celebrate Mass and offer catechesis. His parish responsibilities also included spiritual guidance for a confraternity and a school for girls.

When the eruption of Vesuvius devastated Torre del Greco in 1794, he was entrusted with helping rebuild the parish of Santa Croce. He became a central figure in the town’s material and religious recovery. His ministry remained rooted in the same local community, particularly among children, laborers and fishing families. Francis canonized Vincenzo Romano in 2018.
