Biography
Vincenzo Grossi grew up in a miller’s family in Pizzighettone near Cremona. While working in the mill, he studied with help from a local priest and prepared to enter the seminary. Parish life also gave him experience organizing games and religious instruction for younger children. He was ordained in 1869.
His later work as a parish priest led him to found the Daughters of the Oratory. The sisters collaborated with priests in educating girls, particularly in rural villages and on the edges of cities. Grossi’s vocation developed through the combined responsibilities of labor, study, sacramental ministry and concern for young people with few opportunities. Francis canonized Vincenzo Grossi in 2015.
