Biography

Vincent Nguyễn Thế Điểm was born at An Do near Cửa Tùng in Quảng Trị. He studied at Hướng Phương and then at the seminary of Vĩnh Trị before becoming a priest. As pastor at Cồn Nam, he instructed Catholics, heard confessions, helped poor people, and prepared catechists for future service. His community experienced growing danger during the persecution of 1838.

When officials arrested his assistant, Vincent struggled to find anyone willing to shelter him and was eventually captured. Under pressure he disclosed the names of hosts, then retracted the testimony after Bishop Pierre Borie urged him to protect others. He continued refusing to abandon his faith and died in 1838. His canonization followed in 1988; the record includes his mistake as well as his final perseverance.
