Biography

Ursula Ledóchowska entered the Ursulines in Kraków and developed a particular concern for students. She organized accommodation for women attending university, then undertook educational work in Saint Petersburg under restrictions on Catholic religious life. The First World War forced her to leave Russia and continue her work in Scandinavia.

There she assisted war victims and worked with people across religious and political divisions. Returning to Poland in 1920 with sisters and orphaned children, she guided the community that became the Ursulines of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus. Her ministry linked schooling, hospitality, and practical reconciliation. Canonized in 2003, Ursula is distinct from her sister Maria Teresa, who founded another community and was beatified.
