Biography
Born Anno Sjoerd Brandsma in the Netherlands, Titus entered the Carmelites after poor health prevented his admission to the Franciscans. He was ordained in 1905 and continued philosophical studies in Rome. On returning home he taught philosophy and mathematics, translated Teresa of Ávila’s writings and contributed to Catholic newspapers and magazines.
He later became professor of philosophy and the history of mysticism at the Catholic university in Nijmegen. During the Nazi occupation his defense of the Church and human dignity brought imprisonment and suffering. The institutional record recognizes him as a martyr and emphasizes his care for fellow prisoners and charity even toward those responsible for his detention. Francis canonized Titus Brandsma in 2022.
