Biography

Thomas Vũ Quang Toán was a Vietnamese catechist from Căn Bản in Thái Bình. He entered church service when young and was entrusted with practical responsibilities at Trung Lãnh for many years. He also belonged to the Dominican Third Order. During persecution he took refuge in the same village with an older priest, but a local informer directed officials to their hiding place.

Thomas was recognized and arrested while the priest escaped. Repeated punishment led him to renounce Christianity, then seek reconciliation with a priest and retract the renunciation before officials. Further pressure brought another relapse, followed by renewed repentance and a final public profession of faith. Deliberate starvation marked his last imprisonment, and he died in 1840. He was canonized in 1988.
