Biography
Thomas Garnet was an English priest whose attempts to study and minister repeatedly brought imprisonment. Born in London, he attended the Jesuit college at Saint-Omer. A storm interrupted a journey to Spain and brought him into English custody, but he escaped and eventually completed his theological studies abroad.
Ordained in 1599, he returned to serve English Catholics. The example of his uncle Henry Garnet influenced his decision to enter the Jesuits in 1604. Religious persecution and the aftermath of the Gunpowder Plot disrupted his work. He died in 1608 and is identified as a saint by the Society of Jesus.
