Biography
Szymon came from Lipnica Murowana and studied at the Jagiellonian Academy in Kraków. Inspired by the Franciscan movement associated with John of Capistrano, he entered the friars at Stradom in 1457. After ordination he served at Tarnów and later became a preacher in Kraków, including at the Wawel cathedral.
His preaching emphasized the name of Jesus, and he traveled on pilgrimage to Italy and the Holy Land. When plague struck Kraków in 1482, he joined fellow Franciscans in visiting sick people, providing assistance and administering the sacraments. He contracted the disease during this service and died that year. Benedict XVI canonized Szymon of Lipnica in 2007.
