Biography
Stephen of Hungary was baptized within a ruling family becoming Christian and later became king. He supported the organization of the Church through bishoprics, monasteries, churches and the arrival of missionaries. His royal responsibilities and religious commitments were closely connected with the formation of the Hungarian kingdom.
His support helped give the developing Church a network of institutions and material resources. He died in 1038 and was canonized in 1083. Catholic memory links his reign with the establishment of Christian life in Hungary, while later observances recall different moments in that history, including his death and the anniversary of his canonization.
