Biography
Stanisław Papczyński came from Podegrodzie and studied at parish, Piarist and Jesuit schools through a period disrupted by warfare. He entered the Piarists, taught rhetoric using a textbook he had prepared and was ordained in 1661. In Warsaw he became known as a preacher, confessor and guide in spiritual life.
Disagreements over religious observance brought prolonged difficulties within his community. With permission, he left the Piarists in 1670 and developed a new foundation, the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. His work as a teacher and spiritual writer formed part of the preparation for this undertaking, which became an enduring Polish religious institute. Francis canonized Stanisław Papczyński in 2016.
