Biography

Solomon Leclercq attended a commercial school run by the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Boulogne-sur-Mer. After a period in commerce, he followed his former teachers into religious life in 1767. He taught, directed novices, managed a community’s affairs and eventually became secretary to the superior general.

During the French Revolution, suppression of religious communities disrupted the brothers’ work. Solomon remained to care for their Paris house after other members had left, and continued practicing his faith despite the danger. He was arrested and killed in 1792. His vocation was that of a teaching brother, rather than an ordained priest. Francis canonized Solomon Leclercq in 2016.
