Biography
Richard the Pilgrim is remembered as the father of Willibald, Winebald and Walburga. His family belonged to the English Christian world from which missionaries later traveled to continental Europe. He undertook a pilgrimage toward Rome with his sons and died at Lucca in Italy before the journey was completed.
Catholic tradition has attached royal titles and further details to his life, but the secure outline is much smaller than those later stories. The Roman Martyrology notice reproduced by Nominis centers on his family, pilgrimage and burial at Lucca. His February 7 commemoration invites readers to distinguish that modest historical outline from elaborations about his rank and travels.
