Biography

Raymond Nonnatus belonged to the early Mercedarian community associated with Peter Nolasco. Catholic tradition connects his religious work with the release of captives in North Africa and describes his willingness to remain as a hostage so that another prisoner could be freed. The account places his concern for captives at the center of his vocation.

The Roman Martyrology remembers him among Peter's first companions and cautiously presents his sufferings as reported tradition. Accounts of his captivity became an enduring part of Mercedarian memory, illustrating the costs associated with the order's purpose. He is remembered as having died around 1240, with his religious identity closely connected to the redemption of prisoners.
