Biography
Rafael Guízar Valencia grew up in Cotija and was ordained in 1901. He preached missions and served as spiritual director in the Zamora seminary. Religious persecution closed a newspaper he had founded and forced him to travel without a permanent home, sometimes using disguises so he could visit sick people and administer the sacraments.
He later worked in Guatemala and Cuba and was appointed bishop of Veracruz in 1919. Returning to Mexico, he visited the extensive diocese, preached, taught catechism and helped communities recovering from an earthquake. His episcopal ministry remained closely concerned with seminary formation and pastoral service under conditions of exile and clandestine activity. Benedict XVI canonized Rafael Guízar Valencia in 2006.
