Biography

Protasius Chong Kuk-bo worked with his father making straw rope in Seoul after the family lost its former prosperity. He encountered Catholicism as an adult. A priest entrusted him with a house where Catholics visiting the capital could stay while receiving the sacraments, and Protasius and his wife cared for these guests.

During the 1839 persecution he initially renounced his faith under pressure and was released. He regretted that decision and repeatedly sought permission to retract it before the authorities. Returned to prison, he suffered further beatings and illness and died there in May. His biography emphasizes repentance as well as his final perseverance.
