Biography

Pierre Maubant was a French priest of the Paris Foreign Missions Society who entered Korea in 1836. He traveled in disguise and initially depended on interpreters and written Chinese to hear confessions. Together with Jacques Chastan, he visited remote Catholic settlements and appointed catechists to help sustain their communities.

Maubant also prepared young Koreans for priestly formation, sending Andrew Kim Tae-gon and two other students to Macao. During the 1839 persecution, Bishop Imbert asked the missionaries to surrender in the hope of reducing the danger to Korean Catholics. Maubant was imprisoned and executed with Imbert and Chastan at Saenamteo.
