Biography

Philip Evans was a Welsh Jesuit priest who studied at Saint-Omer and returned to South Wales after ordination in 1675. He served Catholics there for four years, becoming known for charity and energetic pastoral work. His decision to remain became especially dangerous when anti-Catholic persecution intensified.

The false accusations associated with Titus Oates in 1678 were followed by rewards for the arrest of Jesuits. Evans was captured and imprisoned in Cardiff Castle. He was executed in 1679. His biography preserves a portrait of a priest who continued serving his community despite increasing pressure to leave the region.
