Biography

Philip Benizi entered the Servite order after an earlier education and career associated with medicine. He became its general superior and worked to sustain the community's religious life and public recognition. The Catholic account also connects him with efforts to reconcile factions in the divided cities of medieval Italy.

He participated in the council at Lyon in 1274 and worked for the continuation of the Servite order. His leadership combined defense of the community with efforts for reconciliation beyond its houses. He died at Todi in 1285, remembered for humility and devotion to Christ's Passion. He was canonized in 1671.
