Biography
Peter Yu Chong-nyul supported himself by selling straw shoes after being orphaned in childhood. The bishops' biography candidly describes gambling and harsh treatment of his wife before his conversion. Baptized by Bishop Berneux in 1864, he stopped gambling, treated his wife more gently and became known for a changed manner of life.
Peter was arrested during communal prayer near Pyongyang in 1866. He was beaten to death in February, and his body was thrown into the Taedong River. His wife recovered it for burial. His biography connects martyrdom with conversion expressed through concrete changes in conduct, especially within his household.
