Biography

Peter Trương Văn Đường was born at Kẻ Sở in Hà Nam, the nephew of Father Peter Trương Văn Thi. His uncle accepted his childhood desire for church service and placed him with another parish priest for education. Peter later assisted at Bầu Nọ, studying Latin and Chinese characters and learning the practical work expected of a catechist.

When officials searched Bầu Nọ for Father Cornay in 1837, Peter was identified with the catechists Paul Mỹ and Peter Truật. Their imprisonment included interrogation and pressure to renounce Christianity. Peter's surviving correspondence thanks the priest who formed him and reflects concern for the scattered Catholic communities. He died in 1838. He was canonized in 1988.
