Biography

Peter Nguyễn Bá Tuần came from Ngọc Đồng in Hưng Yên. His seminary studies were interrupted when restrictions on Christianity forced the school to close. He assisted a missionary while moving between hiding places and returned to study after the seminary reopened. Ordained in 1807, he spent many years serving Catholic communities in northern Vietnam.

In 1838 Peter remained with the sick missionary Joseph Fernández when local Catholics feared that sheltering the visitor would bring punishment upon their village. He helped move Fernández to another refuge rather than leave him without care. Peter's subsequent captivity involved torture, deprivation, and illness, and he died in prison. He was canonized in 1988.
