Biography
Peter Lê Tùy was born in a farming family at Bằng Sở, in the region of Hanoi. His parents supported his preparation for church service during a period of religious restrictions. He studied at the seminary of Kẻ Vĩnh and, as a deacon, assisted Bishop La Mothe in missionary work in Nghệ An. He later became a priest with knowledge of Latin and Chinese characters.
Peter was captured in 1833 while traveling to administer the sacraments to a seriously ill person. An official proposed releasing him if he claimed to be a physician, but Peter refused to conceal his priesthood through a false declaration. He was beheaded that year. He was canonized in 1988.
